NEW Underwriting Case Study on Diabetes
We will be releasing new underwriting resources throughout the year. This month, we’re starting with the first of a series of underwriting case studies: The Impact of Diabetes, where we take a closer look at some of the factors influencing our underwriting approach.
Statistics on Diabetes
Take a look at these staggering statistics* that have a dramatic impact on mortality and morbidity results for insurers:
- From 2001 to 2020, diabetes prevalence significantly increased among US adults 18 or older.
- 37.3 million people have diabetes—that’s 11.3% of the US population.
- 8.5 million people who have diabetes have not been diagnosed and do not know they have it.

With improved screening, risk modifications, and treatments, Diabetics are living longer, healthier lives and are usually insurable. Underwriting Diabetes focuses on several factors: age of onset, control, complications, and other co‑morbidities. Many well‑controlled diabetics can qualify for Standard rates. Those with pre‑diabetes, or mildly elevated Glycohemoglobin A1c may be able to qualify for Preferred.
