Human API Updates

Human API Updates

As part of our digital transformation journey, we continue to expand our thinking about medical records. We began
working with Human API in 2019 using the patient portal concept of obtaining electronic health records (EHRs).
We continue to drive innovation with Human API, with the goal of obtaining a high percentage of records
electronically, in a streamlined and efficient manner, resulting in a better experience for our producers and clients.
We’re excited to share the following updates:

• In February, Human API added Epic Chart Gateway as a new data source. They have now added
Veradigm as a second non-patient portal data source. This provides an alternative to obtain electronic
records when the client does not have a patient portal or is unable to connect.
• When an electronic health record is not available via the patient portal or one of the new data sources,
Human API will pivot to obtain a traditional APS from our APS Vendor, Release Point.
• Human API will also be handling the Special Authorization process, working directly with the client
when the facility requires this authorization form to obtain records.

What does this mean for you and for clients?

• Clients won’t need to be directly involved in the EHR retrieval process. However, research shows that
the patient portal approach is the fastest method to digitally secure EHR data. So please encourage
clients to continue to utilize the portal process.
• Because Human API will be obtaining a “medical record,” which may be an EHR or an APS, our system
will reflect a new requirement named Medical Records.
• If the client is not interested in connecting via their patient portal, please do not request that we cancel the
requirement. That requirement will be used for the alternative EHR sources and/or APS.
• All APS Status feeds will still come via the Release Point website.

This streamlined approach to obtaining medical records utilizing Human API’s workflow should result in shorter
cycle times and a more efficient process for our producers, clients, and underwriters.
