An Inside Look at Our Underwriting Transformation

If we haven’t met already, please allow me to introduce myself. I’m Zach Pugh, Chief Underwriter at Legal & General America (LGA). Since joining LGA in January of 2022, I’ve been on a mission to make life better for advisors and their clients. Specifically, we’re using technology in new ways to enable a more human and inclusive underwriting experience.
Below are a few ways we’re reinventing underwriting:
- Appetite: Consider us your go-to partner for all types of business. By leveraging predictive analytics, we were able to relax criteria for 16 health conditions, making it easier for your clients with health conditions to get through underwriting. We’ve also relaxed our stance for vapers, individuals with sleep apnea, and enhanced our finance underwriting guidelines.
- Tempo: By instantly accessing clients’ electronic health records, we’re responding to applications faster than ever before, with 30% of cases receiving an instant decision1 and 52% of cases receiving approval within 10 days2 – without the need for labs.
- Teamwork: Recent updates to our systems and processes give advisors more voice and visibility through every step of the underwriting journey. (Watch for details in our next email!) We’ve automated tedious tasks and added 30 new underwriters, so our team has more time to work collaboratively and think creatively.
- Rate: You can count on us to be highly competitive in all classes, and thanks to technology, we can quickly file new rates as needed.
