Fraud: Help, my account has been compromised!

Cyber criminals target email and social media accounts to steal personal information such as usernames, passwords, Social Security, bank account and credit card numbers.

Unauthorized access can be gained in the following ways:

  • Phishing scam (Deceptive email or website tricks you into revealing your login credentials or personal information)
  • Malware (Clicking on malicious links or downloading infected attachments)
  • Weak password
  • Data breach
  • Unsecure Wi-Fi connection

Common red flags / Unrecognized activity:

  • Notification that your email address or phone number has been changed
  • Notification that your password was reset
  • Notification that someone tried to log into your email or social media account
  • You’re unable to log into your account / your account has been locked
  • Unfamiliar emails sent from your account
  • Changes to your email settings

Tips if you feel your account has been compromised:

  • Update your password (Choose a strong password that is hard to guess or use a passphrase)
  • Sign out of the account on all devices (This will kick out anyone logged into your account on another device)
  • Secure your account with two-factor authentication when available
  • Check for signs that someone had access to your account (E.g., there are auto-forwarding rules in your email account that you did not set up)
  • Have your devices checked for viruses and malware
